NASA White Sands Test Facility HABS/HAER Photography and Research
Project type
HABS/HAER Research and Photography
Date
October 2020
Location
White Sands Test Facility, Las Cruces, NM
In 2020, while working on an occasional basis with Outside The Box LLC, I had the fantastic opportunity to conduct the HABS/HAER photography and research for an engine test stand at NASA's White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces, NM. I conducted the photography using 4x5 TMAX 400 film, in October 2020 during a brief respite in travel and access restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The facility was built in the early 1960s to support NASA's Apollo mission. Area 300 was the first to be completed, and focused its energies from 1963 to 1971 on tests of propulsion systems. Test Stand 302 was built in 1964, an altitude test chamber with a removable top and supported by a steel frame and a reinforced concrete foundation. After the Apollo mission in the early 1970s, the facility continued in use for the Skylab Space Station program, the Mars Viking program, and the Space Shuttle program
NASA granted me permission to post these photographs publicly, and has requested that I include the following disclaimer:
